The Location – Selinda Spillway

The Selinda Spillway is a natural channel that connects the Okavango Delta to the Linyanti River system. It is renowned for its abundant wildlife and pristine scenery.

Four of the Big Five (except rhino) occur here, alongside thriving populations of elephants, zebra, wildebeest, and the area’s iconic wild dogs. March falls within Botswana’s lush emerald season — a period of renewal when the floodplains are alive with calving herds, predators on the move, and dazzling birdlife.

Typical temperatures: Day ≈ 31 °C | Night ≈ 20 °C — warm days, pleasant evenings.

  • Health: Consult your doctor about malaria precautions and routine travel vaccinations. Bring any personal medication you require, as the camp is remote.

Season & Weather

March marks the tail end of the green season — lush grasslands, clear skies after occasional afternoon showers, and spectacular light for photography.
Expect a vibrant landscape, baby animals in abundance, and predators active around the floodplains — a tracker’s paradise.

A Few Things to Consider:

  • You are reasonably fit and can walk for at least two hours. No tracking experience needed.
  • You have no pre-existing physical or mental health conditions that could affect your safety whilst in the bush.
  • You understand that this is about learning the ancient art of tracking, not a guaranteed Big 5 sighting (although the Selinda Spillway is a game rich wildlife area).
  • You have comfortable walking shoes and wear natural-coloured clothing.
  • Bring a hat, sunscreen, water bottle, energy bars, and a small backpack to carry these items.
  • You will follow Renias’s instructions and that of the Trails Guides without question.
